Dear Steve:
I wanted to first start by saying that you are the best boss ever!
You may have only been my boss for 4 years of my career but in these 4 years you have made me feel more appreciated and valued than my prior boss did in the 26 years I worked for him! I will never forget on my first day of work you took me to lunch (my choice you said, I picked Panera). And you and the rest of the Payroll team had a party (I was even given Tulips!) for me on my first day of work! During my first week, you brought me around the company and introduced me to everyone that I would be working with. You showed me where the cafeteria and little library was and the credit union and gym and other areas that I would need to know. Throughout these 4 years you always advised me when I did a good job and talked me down when I wanted to fall on the sword (ugh - when I unknowingly contacted a 369 employee directly and got into trouble with the union because I did not contact them through the local)
During my interview for my position, I remember you advised that you will do whatever it takes to have a great department and that you would do whatever is needed to help with our success, even if it was licking stamps. So far, we have not had to lick stamps but we have encountered some unusual situations. I remember we were celebrating Jackie’s birthday and my phone rang and it was an irate employee complaining that his net check was so small and then he turned despondent and the call turned scary and you were able to speak to him and defuse the situation.
Our bi-weekly Payroll processing on Monday nights used to have us in the office past the normal 5pm cut off time and you bought us dinner and dessert! (gotta love Box Bistro and their meals and especially their Energy bites!) And during those late nights you always made sure I got to my car that was parked in the garage even though you were parked in the parking lot.
I appreciate all the times you let me leave work early or come in late as I had something going on with one of my cats, dogs, rabbits or chickens! When you knew one of them was sick you always asked how they were doing.
I remember you took us on a “field trip” to Mortensen’s Dairy Ice Cream, even though it was only across the street it was a nice and fun thing to do. When we needed a time out or had a break during payroll close, I remember our team walking the campus outside or also walking inside when the weather was bad. We had some great discussions during these walks, though you do walk fast! (I remember you said you got that from your mother as a little kid as you held onto her dress as she walked fast)
You always let us leave early on the Friday before a holiday and made holidays, our birthdays and or any day special when you brought in your famous fruit salad and or a racetrack pastry from Elmwood Bakery or Irish soda bread on Saint Patrick’s Day.
During Covid it is hard to keep connected as a team, but you remembered our birthdays and every week you held multiple touch points to touch base with us.
Even though it has only been 4 years for me, you left an incredible impression on me, on what it means to be a part of an incredible team, a valued member of a company and our Payroll Department will not be the same without you!
Warm Regards
Maria Maccio
